My grandmother Maureen passed away when I was a freshman in HighSchool.I was really close to her, I often spent weekends with her and she is mainly responsible for me having the travel bug that I have. I would go on trips with her throughout the US and I would spend summers with her at her real home which was in St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands). She was a cook. And as long as I could remember she cooked professionally for kindergarten children in a school in Canarsie Brooklyn.A lot of our time together was spent on the road or in her kitchen. In her neighborhood she was known as the "cake lady". Everyone requested cakes from her (which is the reason I LOVE cake so much til this day). I have lots of memories of spending weekends with my grandma Maureen. She spoiled me because I was her only grandchild so most of the time I was allowed to request certain meals from her. I really loved her curry chicken (she knew it). She would make it with a side of rice and cabbage. It was a bit of a regular dish so one weekend while at her place. I sat in the kitchen while she cooked and blasted her calypso on her tiny radio on top of the refrigerator.I could smell curry on the stove so I was REALLY excited to eat one of my favorite meals (at that time it was curry chicken). Once she was done she placed a plate in front of me and I could tell that this time the dish looked a bit different but the smell was kind of the same. I poked the meat with my fork and it was normal. So I ate it. She asked in her accent, why was I playing with my food and I should eat. And so I did.I ate everything. Cleaned the plate. She asked me with a smile if I enjoyed it. I told her I really did but the chicken tasted a bit different this time. She gave a hearty laugh and admitted that it was curry goat.I was shook. She knew me. She knew that I would not try it if she told me what it was before hand. And I appreciate that because this taught me a valuable lesson.Try new things. They may not sound great. But they can be the most delicious dishes you've ever tried.I can now eat curry goat from sun rise to sun set.So to answer the question, my favorite meal from my grandmother Maureen is curry goat. < Here's a recipe from Grace Foods that gives me the feels and makes me remember the good times in my grandmother's kitchen.
